John G. Hankins, M.D.
Dr. Hankins opened Brookwood Oncology Hematology Associates, P.C. in 1973 after serving as
Chief of Medicine at the Jefferson Health Foundation. In 1990 Dr. Hankins opened a second
office Shelby Oncology, located in Alabaster, Alabama, near the Shelby Baptist Medical
Center. Dr. Hankins has served as a Clinical Instructor for the University of Alabama
Hospitals & Clinics since 1971. Dr. Hankins is an active staff member of Brookwood
Medical Center, Shelby Baptist Medical Center, and a courtesy staff member of HealthSouth
Medical Center. Dr. Hankins has participated in more than 45 clinical trials and is a member
of many Professional Societies. Dr. Hankins is board certified by the American Board of
Internal Medicine and board eligible in Oncology & Hematology.

Dr. Elizabeth Lowenthal
In 2003 Dr. Elizabeth Lowenthal moved into the new Oncology facility located at the Shelby
Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, Alabama. The new facility is a beautiful, state-of-the-art
design located in central Alabama. Dr. Lowenthal has served as Principal Investigator on more
than 15 protocols, has published more than 15 abstracts, 7 manuscripts, and presented 6 articles
in several states. Dr. Lowenthal is board certified in Intenal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and
Hematology. Dr. Lowenthal has chaired several committees and is a member of several Professional
Organizations. Dr. Lowenthal is an active staff member at both Shelby Baptist Medical Center and
Chilton Medical Center. Dr. Lowenthal holds several academic honors as an Undergraduate student,
including the Presidential Scholarship, Beta Beta Beta (Biology Honor Society), Alpha Epsilon
Delta (Pre-Med Honor Society), and graduated Cum Laude. As a graduate student Dr. Lowenthal
continued her honors being awarded Sigma Sigma Phi (Academic/Service Honor Society), National
Dean's List, Dean's Award, Sigma Sigma Phi Outstanding Student Award, and the Sigma Sigma Phi
Outstanding Senior Award.
Dr. Susan Ferguson
In 2004 Dr. Susan Ferguson joined Dr. Elizabeth Lowenthal as a staff physician at Central Alabama
Oncology, LLC. Prior to joining Dr. Lowenthal, she had served as the Clinic Director for
Hematology/Oncology and the Hepatitis C Clinic at Cooper Green Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.
Dr. Ferguson is board certified in Internal Medicine, and Medical Oncology. Dr. Ferguson has
served as Principal Investigator on more than 25 protocols. She has published more than 9
manuscripts, and served as a Board Member on the American Journal of Medicine from 1994-1998.
Dr. Ferguson has received the Certificate of Appreciation from the Center for Disease Control
and Prevention, Epidemiology Branch for Exceptional Service to the Division of Viral Hepatitis;
a Public Health Award from the Jefferson County Department of Health; and Recognition for Support
of Breast Cancer from the Sister Survivors of the American Cancer Society, among many others.
At Samford University she was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Hypatia Honor Society, and the Beta
Beta Beta Biological Honor Society. Dr. Ferguson is an active staff member of Cooper Green
Hospital and Shelby Baptist Medical Center.
Southern Hematology & Oncology, P.C.

Luigi F. Bertoli, M.D.
In 1993 Dr. Bertoli, along with Drs. Hankins and Pineda, started Southern Hematology & Oncology,
P.C. at Brookwood Medical Center. Prior to starting his practice at Brookwood he was Director
of Apheresis with Brookwood Medical Center and Medical Director at Brookwood Biomedical. Dr.
Bertoli has participated in more than 60 clinical trials in his time at Southern Hematology &
Oncology. He is a highly published doctor and has received several awards and grants. Dr.
Bertoli not only sees patients in his practice at Brookwood Medical Center, he also has hospital
affiliations with Shelby Baptist Medical Center and HealthSouth Medical Center. Dr. Bertoli's
other professional experience includes time at the University of Alabama in Birmingham
serving as an Associate Professor and Instructor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology and as
Assistant Scientist in the Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Brian K. Adler, M.D.
Dr. Adler joined the practice at Southern Hematology & Oncology, P.C. in November of 2003.
Prior to joining the group at Brookwood Medical Center Dr. Adler practiced at the University
of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr. Adler started as an Instructor of Internal Medicine in the
Division of Hematology/Oncology. Dr. Adler became the Director of
the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program while serving as an Assistant Professor in Internal
Medicine. In February of 1997 Dr. Adler became the Director of Clinical Sickle Cell Disease
Studies at UAB, a position he still holds. Dr. Adler has received several grants from various
organizations and has been well published over the years. Dr. Adler holds hospital affiliations
with HealthSouth and HealthSouth MetroWest.
